Chacko's wife left him about nine years ago for a man who is know dead. Now that the man is dead, Chacko can see his baby girl, Sophie Mol, who he hasn't seen since the divorce nine years ago. When he gets to the city they all go to see The Sound of Music at the movie theater. The experience is a terrible one for Estha for has a bad experience with the man who sells the drinks at the theater. Ammu makes the family leave the theater after Estha becomes sick and they go back to the hotel for the night. Estha never tells Ammu what happened with the drink vender because he doesnt want Ammu to love him less.
Back at the hotel, Estha sleeps in a room with Ammu and Baby Kochama because he is sick and Rahel sleeps with Uncle Chacko. Uncle CHacko cannot stop thinking about his baby girl who he hasnt seen in forever and therefore cant sleep. He wakes up at 2am to find that Estha has come into his room to sleep with Rahel.
I hated these chapters so much. They were really sick and I wonder what they are going to have to do with the book later on. I realize now the bond that Estha and Rahel have as twins and how Ammu tends to favor Estha more. I really hope the guy at the movie theater doesn't show up and abduct Estha. I also hope the book moves on from these negative chapters and takes a more positive turn.
I think its dumb that CHacko had to wait until Joe was dead to see Sophie Mol. The more influence he could have had on her when she was younger would have been better than her being raised just by her mother. I know i wouldnt be comfortable if my kid was being raised by some stranger.
Estha really needs to tell someone what happened in the theater, although i think Rahel knows somehow, because all of the could collect inside of him and drive him to insanity or to commit suicide or something. He needs to know that Ammu will still love him.

The God of Small Things, chapters 1&2
The first two chapters of this book were very long compared to the other chapters because they introduced the characters and gave background on them.
Mammachi- the grandmother of the twins and mother of Ammu. Had a pickly factory called "Paradise Pickles and Preserves." Was abused by her husband because he didnt like her being successful.
Pappachi- the grandfather of the twins. he is deceased at the time of this book. the twins rememeber that he discovered a new kind moth but was never given credit for the discovery until after his death.
Rahel- the girl twin
Estha- the boy twin
Baby Kochamma- the ex-nun. bossy and stern and always thinks she knows how people should live their lives. she never liked the twins because they were born from a divorced marriage.
Ammu- the mother of the twins and daughter of mammachi and pappachi. Married a drunk and had the twins and then divorced him because he started to be violent towards the children.
Velutha- a man 3 years younger than Ammu who the twins adore. He builds toys out of reed and is a very good carpenter. some think he could be an engineer if he wasn't an untouchable. He dissapeared from home for five months after that and no one knows why. He is the neighbor of Ammu, Estha, and Rahel, who all adore him.
Chacko- the uncle of the twins
Chacko, Ammu, Baby Kochama, and the twins are all in their blue plymoth when a protest erupts in the city. The untouchables were having a revolution and trying to get their women higher pay, an hour lunchbreak from working in the fields, and they didn't want to be addressed by their caste names. In this protest, Rahel swore she saw Velutha. When she told this to the rest of the car Ammu became very angry and told her to shut up and that it wasn't Velutha. After the protestors area way from the car, Chacko asks Rahel if she was sure that Velutha was in the protest and Rahel said she wasn't sure. The rest of the car disregarded the fact that Rahel might of saw Velutha, but Rahel was 100% sure it was Velutha.
The book is really confusing so far. It keeps jumping around in time and i dont really know everyone and their connections to each other that well just yet to not get lost when it jumps. I do like Velutha so far. He seems like a really genuine person. It is a shame that he is an untouchable or he could be better friends with Ammu and the twins.
I think the man in the protest was Velutha. I think Rahel likes him enough to recognize him anywhere. The rest of the family doesnt want to acknowledge the fact that it was Velutha for some reason. Deep down they all probably know that it really was Velutha in the crowd.
