Chapters 20&21

chapter 20 was really sad. estha knew his mom would never return for him and he knew she would never succeed with her goals. instead she died alone in a hotel room.

im really confused as to what went down when rahel returned 23 years later. i knew they always had a close bond.. but im hoping it didnt go too far. it said they broke the love laws... ew. maybe, hopefully im misinterpretting this.

I knew the lover was Velutha! but he didnt have one arm.. whatever. i guess ill never get it.

it was really sad when the book said "could he have avoided all of this? probably. probably not." it kind of made me want to cry.

Most of this would have never happened if he wouldnt have been with Ammu that one night. its weird to see how things play out.

this is the most depressing book ive ever read. nothing good ever happened. it opened my eyes to how much the caste society really sucks though. everything in this book was just so traumatizing. i wish i could just rewind their lives and tell ammu and velutha not to get involved. it owuld have prevented everything because all the bad events spiralled from them. this was deffinetly different. a little too wierd at times for my taste. im not sure if i would recommend it. overall an interesting read if nothing else. i didnt mind it i guess.

Chapters 18&19

CHapter 18 was realy sad because Velutha was hurt really badly by the police. He didnt deserve it all and then he died. ANd he never got to say goodbye to Ammu and Ammu never got to see him etiher.

I do not like Baby Kochamma. She is the villian in this book. She screwed everything up. SHe told the police Velutha rape Ammu. then after teh children dissapeared she manipulated them into thinking that they forced sophie mol on the boat and that they pushed her into the river. she made them think her death wasnt an accident. she also made them think velutha kidnapped them. she also told them that if they didnt say velutha kidnapped them that Ammu would go to jail. What the heck baby kochamma? seriously... mind your own busines!!!

Ammu ended up visiting the police station after Baby Kochamma, which is good because now people will know the truth. Velutha wasnt a bad man. I hope Baby Kochamma is the one who goes to jail. She deserves it for making up stories and manipulating children like she did.

Baby Koachamma also turned Chacko against Ammu and the twins telling him that Sophie's death was their fault. But it wasnt! it was an accident. For being a nun Baby Kochamma isnt very honest. No wonder why she is an ex-nun. she irritates me so badly.

Chapters 15,16&17

What happened to Sophie Mol was terribly tragic. Of all ways to die she had to drown. And it was because a log floated down the river and hit the boat. I think she was about to make friends with the twins too. She was really starting to come around. Dissapointing.

Another flash around to when Estha leaves on a train. ugh quit flashing back already!

I feel bad for the whole family at this point. FIrst they find out about Ammus affrair, Sophie Mol is going to drown, and the factory is going to be overthrown by the Communists because they continued to employ Velutha. How many unfortunate things can happen to one family? It is wierd how at the beginning of the book Rahel thought one moth was going to curse the family, and so far it really has.

I am also wondering about the former relationship between Father Mulligan and Baby Kochamma. was there something there? i have no idea. but fathers and nuns and stuff arent supposed to do things like that... so odd. Its so sad that she still writes "i love you" in her journal. Im assuming its about father mulligan.

I really hate how the oragngedrink lemondrink think never leaves estha. poor estha.

these three chapters were really short and not too eventful.

Chapter 14

In this chapter CHacko visits comrade Pillai and they discuss the pickly factory. I wonder if they have to do this because it's a communist government. Do communists governments control businesses like that? Am i thinking of a different government type? Oh who knows.

Pillai's son is so adorable!! i loved it when he recited the funeral oration.

Im so scared for Velutha. Not only does his dad want to kill him but the town is talking. I just want him and Ammu to run away together. I dont want him to lose his job at the factory either. I know the workers are jealous because he's an untouchable, but htey need to get over this caste crap. Honestly it benefits nobody. YOu can't even make a better life for yourself if youre an untouchable becuase people wont let you! It's soooo dumb.

I just think Velutha is too kind hearted to be experiencing all of this unfortune.

I'm also sad that Paradise Pickles went out of business. I think its cool that Chacko went to Canada though. Canada is a pretty cool place... haha thats punny. But he should have thought about everybody else before he jsut deserted the factory like that.

Its funny how everyone addresses each other as "comrade." it reminds me of the Stalin game and i find myself chuckling, but they are actually serious about it. When they dont say comrade they get offended. Communists are so bipolar.

Chapter 13

This was a long one, so it gets its separate blog.

I found out about the story of how Chacko and Margaret met. He really loved her a lot. Thats why its so sad that their marriage did not last very long at all. She never really loved him and he never saw it. She was the only person he had ever loved, which makes this whole situation more sad.

I finally found out how Sophie Mol died. She drowned in the river. I bet Estha feels terrible. He was the one that decided that they needed to run away. However, i doubt it was all his fault. There werent too many details on how Sophie Mol drowned.

So Velutha's dad came over the river and told Mammachi about Velutha and Ammu's secret realtionship at night. Baby Kochamma freaked out and went to the police station and told a story about how Velutha molested Ammu. I'm very angry at baby Kochamma for that. She didn't do that in the best interests of anyone, just herself. SHe didnt want her family looked at badly becuase Ammu was interacting with an untouchable. I wonder what will happen to Velutha.

THe family then locks Ammu in her bedroom and she goes crazy and tells the twins she doesnt love them and that they are burdens. This prompts them to run away and SOphie Mol drowns. So is everything Ammu's fault?

Poor Margaret. SHe came to INdia to forget about the loss of Joe and ended up losing SOphie Mol too. Now she has nothing. I feel so bad for her.

I also feel bad because Sophie Mol was just about to make friends with her cousins and then she drowned. She might have turned out to be a decent person... but we'll never know.

Chapters 11&12

In these chapters Ammu has a dreamt that she is in love with a one armed man. The twins return from Velutha's house and awake her. She notices the saw dust on them and tells them no to go over there because they will only cause trouble. Ammu starts to question her sanity. SHe thinks she will go crazy because everyone in her family eventually goes crazy.

There is a flashback in these chapters to how CHacko locked Ammu out of her room four days after the funeral of Sophie Mol. I wonder how Sophie Mol dies. When will i find out? GAH! I'm so impatient...

I wonder if the one armed lover is Velutha. To my knowledge Velutha has two arms, but maybe he'll lose one or soemthing. I hope the lover is Velutha. He's such a nice guy.

It's too bad that Ammu is doomed to go crazy. I already know she goes semi-crazy from a previous flashback.

Estha was sent away to school in these chapters. Separating the twins wasn't a good thing to do. They have a special bond and they are like one human being. I personally would not have done it. I think Chacko has something to do with Estha being sent away, but im not entirely sure as of yet.

The story in chapter 11 reminds me of Oedidipus a little. The lady says she wont harm the four children, but the fifth one might kill her or she might kill it. Terribly wierd. Stories of fate like this one and Oedipus creep me out.

Chapters 9&10

Chapter 10 is Rahel returning to the pickle factory. It is worn down and brings back a flashback in chapter 11.

Estha was missing from Sophie Mol's welcoming because he was inside the factory making banana jam. He was preserving his memories in the jam. He decided that he needed to "Be prepared." Soon he finds a boat that he wants to fix up. "A boat that Rahel found, Estha sat on, and Ammu would use to cross the river to love a man by night whomher children loved by day."
They take it to Velutha and start to fix it up.

From the above verse i can conclude that Ammu will be in a relationship with Velutha, she'll just have to sneak around at night.

I feel so bad for Estha. The orangedrink lemondrink man still haunts him. It takes the calm of the river to make him forget about him.

I continue to grow more and more irritated by Sophie Mol. The adults love her but she continues to be ungrateful and bratty. I guess she's been through a lot with her step dad dying... but still.

Velutha's brother is paralyzed and just lays in bed all day. I thnk about how depressing that would be. He's fairly young too. Can't someone sit him in a chair under a shady tree or somehting? Don't make him waste his life away in a dim corner.

I also think Velutha is the father figure for the twins, secretly. The rest of the family and community stil wont accept him. And it was him at the march. He was talking to his brother about it. Velutha also loves Ammu, i found that out this chapter too.

Chapters 7&8

Chapter 7 was relatively short recalling when Ammu died. She died in a hotel room from athsma. The day before she died she visited Rahel, but Ammu was drunk. This made Rahel hate Ammu.

Chapter 8 picks up at the factory where everyone is waiting to see Sophie Mol. Everyone makes a huge fuss over her while Rahel plays with Velutha. Velutha denies marching with the communists the day before. Maragret Kochamma asks a question innapropriately and Ammu answers sarcastically and storms off. Rahel doesnt like Sophi Mol so far. Estha is missing somewhere.

I think that something will happen between Velutha and Ammu. Before when they were younger they couldn't be together because the castes didnt permit it. But now since the revolution they can be together. I think they will be together. However, it will have to be a secret realtionship because Mammachi and the rest still do not approve of him. I guess they will always think in the old ways of the caste society.

I'm getting really sick of Sophie Mol already. She just seems like a stuck up english girl, just like her mother. They need to go back to where they came from. I know CHacko misses Sophie Mol and Maragret, but Margaret sure doesnt miss him and i dont think Sophie Mol even cares about him. She doesnt even acknowledge him as her dad.

I really hope Estha wasnt kidnapped by the orangedrink lemondrink. That would be terrible.

It helps having already learned about caste society in India to better understand this book.

One thing im really not liking about this book is that it is jumping around so much. You really have to concentrate and then take the events that happen and put them in correct order in your head. UGH.

Chapters 5&6

This section started with Rahel returning back to India from America. She was walking past familiar landmarks from her childhood when Comrade Pillai pulled her aside. He kept asking her questions and how everyone in her family was doing. This made Rahel recall a memory from her childhood when her and Pillai's son, Lenin, both shoved stuff objects up their nose and were in the doctors office.

Chapter six picks up were chapter four left off, at the airport. Rahel and Estha were supposed to be on their best behavior to impress Sophie Mol and her mother, Margret Kochamma. However, when the time came for introductions Rahel hid in a curtain and Estha would not speak to Margret. So far Sophie Mol seems sort of stuck up. I think she's going to die soon because Rahel keeps talking about how she's a "coffin-cartwheeler."

These chapters were really interesting. I'm just wondering where the plot is going. Is it just a narration of their lives? Also, I feel bad for the twins. They have an unfortunate life. A mother who is crazy, a grandaunt who is annoying, and they live in complete filth. However, they will inherit the pickle factory one day. I guess that's a good thing. These chapters were better than the last two.

When Sophie Mol does die, will she actually be dead? Earlier in the book it said something about her being buried alive. Creepy...

I wonder why the children clammed up so bad at the airport. Did Margaret give off a really scary first impression or something? Maybe they just knew off the bat that they would not like Margaret and Sophie.

I feel bad for Rahel becuase she feels like her mom loves Sophie more than her, when in acuality they are just making a big deal out of her on this day. children are like that though. They think that when they are ignored for just a little bit that everyone hates them or doesnt want them around.
