Salt's Salad Days

I'll start with saying i'm very creeped out at the parts of a pig that the Romans ate. Where would they even get the idea to eat those things? Especially froma a pig. Gross. However, I'm all for seasoning food. I'm not a big fan of meat when it's not seasoned.

I think it's nice that the Roman's made salt affordable for everyone, and clever how they raised the prices to recieve money for the army. That's sort of like gas prices today. I guarentee they don't need to be as high as they should be, so somewhere along the line someone is getting a lot of money. Gas, like salt, is also more expensive the further away you live from a supplier. Also, most towns around here were oil boom towns, and most roman cities were founded where salt could be found. Wow, salt is like gasoline/oil... who would have thought?

Wow! I seriously just had a biblio moment (i think only tim gets that.. maybe some HE students)

soldiers were paid in salt= salary
latin "sal"= french "solde
solde=pay
solde=soldier
salad=salted
Maybe im just easily ammused.. but i think that's so awesome!

I deffinetly think the romans ate too much salt in their diets. Salt on salad, salty wine, ans salty hams. However it says they only consumed 25 grams a day. How is this possible?

Boo to the French who tried to take the credit for the invention of ham away from the Celts.

I would fit in with the Plebians becuase i love olives. I approve of eating olives before every meal. I actually just ate black olives today on my salad. I would probably not eat the main dish of fish however. I hate fish, a lot. I especially hate tuna, therefore i would be shunned in Sicily.

If i'm gonna adopt Asian babies i better start eating rice and salt everyday. But you know, i'm a huge fan of rice. So i think i could live like that. But i refuse to eat that nasty fish crap over my fruits and veggies. I wonder if they ever got sick from eating that nasty fish paste?

Bromine means stench. That's pretty cool. So i guess bromine is purple? It took a lot of effort to get the purple dye. It must have been expensive. No wonder why the royal wore it.

The Romans did put salt on everything! It's surprising that they all didn't die because of high blood pressure or whatever it is that a large amount of salt can do. Their large amount of salt is probably equal to what we would call a little amount of salt. I liked your blog! I also liked connecting the words like salary and soldier, I didn't know that solde meant salt though.

I remember that HE moment! Definitely! And I also think it is extremely disturbing that the Romans ate those parts of pigs. I surely would not. It's like fear factor.... Only not. At all. And they were very very salty people. I think they probably had very high blood pressure.

Yeah, that was pretty strange. Then again if you have ever eaten a hot dog... Well, I won't elaborate since that pretty much has those parts.

Seasoned meat is good. I prefer Quaker Steak & Lube sauce myself. Yummy. I'm sure salt plays a factor in those sauces. :-)

Taxing salt was a souce of income for the Romans. Just like today Uncle Sam taxes everything from cell phones to sports cars to make $$$. So nothing really changes.

YOU WROTE: "Wow, salt is like gasoline/oil... who would have thought?" A lot of kids in this class have drawn that conclusion. I think it is pretty cool that you guys were able to do this. Bravo!

Like you, I also enjoy learning the origin of words. I think it is one of the more cooler parts of this book.

You point out they consumed too much salt, which may be true. However their life expectancy was much shorter. Mid 40's-50's and that was it. Are these related?

Can't say I share your love for Olives. What is the difference between black and green ones? Amount of salt? I can't seem to get myself to eat them.

Goram? the fish spread is very nasty, but was VERY popular back in the day. They would spread it on toast and everything. Pretty nasty stuff I imagine.

YOU WROTE: "It took a lot of effort to get the purple dye. It must have been expensive. No wonder why the royal wore it. "

Exactly.
